Maria Mitchell Association Hosts 4 Days of Sharks on Nantucket

Join the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) as it hosts its very own Shark Week! The MMA will be offering special Shark Week inspired events throughout the week of July 25th with visiting scientist, Caroline Collatos. Izzy Gaw, Natural Science Museum Director says, “We are so excited to share Caroline’s shark education expertise with Nantucket.” Collatos is a shark scientist and PhD student at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium and UMass Boston. The Maria Mitchell Association is a private non-profit organization. Founded in 1902, the MMA works to preserve the legacy of Nantucket native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator, Maria Mitchell. The Maria Mitchell Association operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, a research center, and preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell. A wide variety of science and history-related programming is offered throughout the year for people of all ages.

MMA Shark Week Schedule

Tuesday, July 26 from 2 to 3 pm
Special Edition Nature Story Hour

To kick off the MMA’s Shark Week, we are hosting a unique Nature Story Hour. During this program, Shark Scientist, Caroline Collatos, will read a special book about sharks and talk about the importance of women in science! She will finish up by making a craft or playing games related to the story. All children must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must register. Members, $10. Non- Members, $15.

Wednesday, July 27 from 10 to 11am
Shark Week Dissection at the Maria Mitchell Association Research Center

Join Caroline Collatos as she educates guests about the biology of sharks during a real shark dissection! Please join us for this next iteration of MMA’s Shark Week to learn about these toothy and fantastic creatures that play an important role in Nantucket’s ecosystems. This program is FREE and designed for children ages 12 and up. Friday, July 29 from 5 to 6 pm
Shark Research Workshop at the Maria Mitchell Association Research Center

Join Caroline Collatos as she discusses her shark research on Nantucket and the importance of sharks in Nantucket’s ecosystem. This class is followed by a Q & A session, so come with all yours shark questions! This program is FREE and designed for children ages 12 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must register.

Saturday, July 30 from 11 am to 12 noon
Shark Work-Up at the Maria Mitchell Association Aquarium 11am-12pm

Join Caroline Collatos as she demonstrates how she tags and works with sharks for her research! She will be demonstrating her field techniques using a life size replica shark and the MMA Aquarium sharks. This program is FREE and designed for children ages 5 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must register.
