As the island transitions from the bustling summer season, many restaurants and businesses begin to close their doors for the off-season. However, several establishments remain open, offering warm, comforting meals that reflect the flavors of fall. Whether you’re craving clam chowder, fresh bay scallops, or a cozy cup of cider, the island’s culinary scene still offers tasty options. Be sure to check local listings for fall hours, as many favorite eateries, such as The Brotherhood of Thieves, The Rose & Crown, and The Breeze, adjust their schedules but continue to serve dishes that highlight the season’s bounty.

On October 19, from 5 to 8 pm, the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club will host their Fall Community Barbecue, a perfect opportunity to come together for food, fun, and fellowship. This event will feature delicious chili, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and more by Island Kitchen, lawn games and family-friendly activities, and a chance to support the local youth programs that make a significant impact on our island community. Gather with friends and neighbors to enjoy an evening filled with laughter and good food.

Sunday, October 20, Inky Santa will host a Chili Cook-Off to raise funds for the 2024 Inky Santa Toy Drive. Traditional, vegetarian, firehouse chilis, will be ready for you to taste and vote on your favorite. A 50/50 raffle and cash bar, add to the fun. The event will be held at the Great Harbor Yacht Club, 96 Washington Street; the suggested entry fee is $15.

Fall fun continues on October 27 with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation’s Fall Festival at 220 Milestone Road. Kicking off the day is the Bat-a-cular Bike Race, a fun and scenic ride that takes participants through stunning natural landscapes on-island. Following the race, NCF offers a variety of free activities for all ages, including hayrides, live music, and educational workshops about the island’s unique ecosystems.

As October draws to a close, Nantucket gears up for its beloved annual Halloween celebration on Main Street. On October 31, the historic thoroughfare will be filled with ghouls and goblins of all ages (and closed to vehicle traffic). Community members of all ages dress in costume: a parade starts at 4 pm at the base of Main Street. Musical groups often offer impromptu live music. Businesses will be adorned with festive decorations and open for trick-or-treating, it’s a lively occasion that brings the community together in a spirited celebration of the holiday. From 4:30 to 6 pm, the Nantucket Historical Association welcomes families at their Whaling Museum at 13 Broad Street for slightly spooky, super fun activities and more trick-or-treating. It’s difficult to say who has more fun at this Nantucket event: kids or grownups.

With summer crowds gone, autumn is an ideal time to explore the natural beauty of our island. Linda Loring Foundation nature trails are open to the public, and their staff is offering birding trips through October. On Friday, October 25 from 3-5 PM for their Annual Trails and Treats. This free event will feature fall and Halloween-themed activities along the LLNF trail at 110 Eel Point Rd–it’s open to all, but intended for families with children in pre-K through grade 5 with their parents. Costumes are welcome but not required, making it a delightful opportunity for families to explore the beauty of nature while enjoying festive activities.

For those looking to engage in creative pursuits this fall, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) offers Decorative Arts Classes, providing participants with the opportunity to learn new skills while creating beautiful handcrafted items. Additionally, their Nantucket Basket Clinics continue through early November, inviting attendees to learn the traditional art of basket weaving, a craft steeped in the island’s history.
