Following days of nervous anticipation, the gigantic post-tropical storm has started stretching her arms in Nantucket’s direction, with gusts racing at 75-80 MPH and storm surges expected to reach eight feet on the Atlantic coast. Schools and government offices are closed for the day, and the steamships haven’t run since Saturday. Most boat owners have pulled their vessels from the harbor, although some diehard surfers took advantage of yesterday’s large waves. Meteorologists are predicting that the island will feel the worst of Sandy’s wrath from mid-day today until early Tuesday morning.
